Unit 7 Blog Exercise

Describe the saying: "One cannot lead another where one has not gone himself (P.477) How does this apply to the health and wellness professional? Do you have an obligation to your clients to be developing your health psychologically, physically, and spiritually? Why or why not? How can you implement psychological and spiritual growth in your personal life?

When I think of the saying "One cannot lead another where one has not gone himself", I can describe that as how can the blind lead the blind.  I think of this statement as I think of one with and with out experience.  One who has experienced a certain situation can educate the next on how to over come the same situation being experienced by a person.  It is like a mother and child.  She will educate her child on what to do and not do from past experiences that she experienced in her life.  This applies to health and wellness profession as if the educator has experienced the affects of stress and integral health, this person can educate others how to over come stress and achieve integral health.  Yes I do have an obligation to my clients to develop my health on all levels.  If any aspect of my health becomes seriously imbalanced I can make mistakes with others financial stability which in turn with under develop their health.  I can implement psychological and spiritual growth in my personal life my praying more and allowing things that I cannot control not take over my mental which then will affect my entire being.

  1. Wanda,

Agreed! "the blind leading the blind", that's exactly what that statement implies. I believe health and wellness practitioners have really become disconnect from what their duties are in serving patients. It's become all about the money and insurance companies. Thus, the spiritual, physological and physical health of patients are compromised. Leading to a further dependance on convientianal medicine to cover up spiritual and physological imbalance, which leads to physical illnesses. I really appreciate the integral health approach in medicine.

  2. It's true that it is much easier and more effective to relate to someone if you yourself have been through the same thing. For example, I would have no idea what to say to someone who was going through chemo therapy because I have never been there. However, if someone is having financial trouble and could definitely understand and relate to that because money is and has been very tight for me and my family. Good post.

  3. Wanda,
It's true when people say you have to walk a mile in my shoes to understand where I've been, this is what people say all the time. This is why I cant or don't give advice unless I've been there before. When I was going through a depression stage after leaving my verbal abusive husband, people and family were telling me how or what I should do to get out of that depression stage and I always felt that I will heal and stand strong on my own time, when I'm ready too and I did but with God's help not because I was told to by others. Unless you been where I've been and you know exactly how I'm feeling then let me do this alone. My mom used to tell me things like this all the time and she never did give me advice she would say do what's in your heart and never let somebody tell you what to do or feel if they haven't been there before themselves.

  4. Hi Wanda,
You have just said the truth. When we talk of our experiences we have passoin and kindness when answering their questions. For you to know that a cone makes you misarable even when you have an expensive shoe. You can give advise if you have one and can tell how you solved your problem because you have travelled the road. You know, at times you might not have it yourself but your very close person might have travelled the road and you followed every step and you know what happened whole heartedly and it impacted your life.
